Safaricom Lowers M-PESA Fees, Expands Data and Fibre Benefits Under Pata More
Beginning 7 August, customers making Lipa na M-PESA Buy Goods payments of up to KES 500 will no longer incur transaction charges, following an increase in the fee-free threshold from KES 200.
Safaricom has introduced a series of customer-focused enhancements under its Pata More initiative, lowering selected M-PESA transaction fees, increasing mobile data allocations, and boosting fibre internet speeds as it seeks to encourage greater adoption of its digital services.
Beginning 7 August, customers making Lipa na M-PESA Buy Goods payments of up to KES 500 will no longer incur transaction charges, following an increase in the fee-free threshold from KES 200. Businesses transferring funds from Buy Goods tills to M-PESA wallets or PayBill accounts will also benefit from transfer charges that have been reduced by around 50%.
Safaricom has also revised pricing for Pochi la Biashara, increasing the fee-free transaction threshold from KES 100 to KES 200. For the next 90 days, transaction charges on larger Pochi payments will be capped at KES 50, a move aimed at supporting merchants and encouraging wider use of digital payments.
In addition to the payments changes, the operator has increased the value of several mobile data bundles without adjusting their prices. The KES 20 daily package now includes 250MB, up from 150MB, while the KES 99 bundle has increased from 1GB to 1.5GB. The KES 1,000 monthly bundle has also been expanded from 10GB to 21.5GB.
Home internet customers are also set to benefit, with Safaricom increasing fibre broadband speeds by as much as 2.5 times. The company is further enhancing its customer offering by bundling selected smartphones with connectivity and insurance benefits and expanding the capabilities of My OneApp, which brings together M-PESA, mobile, home fibre, and customer support services in a single platform.
The latest enhancements form part of Safaricom’s broader strategy to drive deeper engagement across its digital ecosystem by encouraging more frequent use of its connectivity and financial services. The company remains Kenya’s dominant mobile money provider, with M-PESA holding an 89.1% market share as of March 2026.
For the financial year ended March 2026, M-PESA Kadogo processed 17.1 billion transactions, representing 58% of all transactions conducted on the platform. During the same period, M-PESA generated KES 182 billion, contributing 45% of Safaricom Kenya’s total service revenue.
