Kenya and Tanzania are strengthening regulatory cooperation on satellite communications as the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) undertakes a two-day benchmarking visit to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).
The visit is focused on exchanging experiences and best practices in regulating satellite communications, with particular attention to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services. Discussions are covering regulatory and licensing frameworks, spectrum management, compliance mechanisms and emerging policy considerations for integrating satellite broadband into national telecommunications ecosystems.
The engagement comes as LEO satellite constellations increasingly operate across national borders, making effective interference management a shared responsibility among regulators. Regional benchmarking therefore provides regulators with an opportunity to assess policy approaches, reduce risks associated with national regulatory decisions and strengthen coordination on cross-border interference management and enforcement.
The two regulators are also using the engagement to share practical knowledge on how regulatory frameworks can adapt to the rapidly evolving satellite communications landscape.
As satellite broadband adoption continues to expand across Africa, the Kenya-Tanzania engagement highlights the growing importance of regional regulatory collaboration.
