Starlink Expands Communities Program With New Shared-Internet Income Model

The approach turns an internet terminal that may otherwise be underused into a shared digital access point, allowing multiple people in the same area to use the service without each having to purchase and install separate equipment.

Starlink  is expanding its Starlink for Communities program with a new model that allows property owners and local operators to earn income by sharing a single Starlink connection with people nearby.

Under the program, hosts install a Starlink dish and router at locations where there is demand for internet access, including apartment complexes, campgrounds, rural communities and event venues. Nearby users can then purchase temporary access passes instead of taking out individual Starlink subscriptions.

The passes are structured around different usage periods. Hourly, daily and weekly options cover one device, while monthly passes can support up to four devices. Starlink manages user accounts, payments, access controls and the satellite connection, while hosts are primarily responsible for providing the location, power and basic maintenance. Hosts earn revenue based on paid connections.

The approach turns an internet terminal that may otherwise be underused into a shared digital access point, allowing multiple people in the same area to use the service without each having to purchase and install separate equipment.

The model also resembles the broader passive-income concept associated with Tesla’s planned Robotaxi network, where privately owned assets could potentially generate revenue while not being used by their owners. However, Starlink’s Communities model is already accepting host applications in several countries, while Tesla’s vision for private vehicle owners earning from autonomous ride-hailing remains at an earlier stage.

Starlink, operated by SpaceX, provides broadband through a constellation of low-Earth-orbit satellites and has expanded access to areas where conventional broadband infrastructure is limited or unavailable. The Communities program adds another distribution model by allowing hosts to provide short-term internet access to people within their vicinity.
