The discussions reflect Kenya’s broader ambition to build an integrated digital ecosystem in which public infrastructure and private-sector innovation work together to enable efficient transactions, stronger businesses and more inclusive economic growth.

Kenya’s State Department for ICT and Digital Economy is exploring opportunities to collaborate with Equity Group  on digital infrastructure, financial inclusion and regional trade as the country seeks to expand its digital economy.

John Kipchumba Tanui, Principal Secretary in the State Department for ICT and Digital Economy, held discussions with James Mwangi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Equity Group, and his team at the group’s headquarters on October 6, 2026.

The engagement focused on how partnerships between government and financial institutions can connect digital infrastructure with financial services and enterprise development, supporting wider economic participation and cross-border commerce.

Tanui highlighted the role of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in improving access to financial solutions, reducing barriers for businesses and creating opportunities for enterprises to reach new markets across Kenya and the wider African region.

Financial inclusion was a central theme, particularly the potential for digital payments, financing and market access solutions to help small businesses and underserved communities participate more fully in the formal economy. Such services could also support enterprise growth and competitiveness.

The discussions reflect Kenya’s broader ambition to build an integrated digital ecosystem in which public infrastructure and private-sector innovation work together to enable efficient transactions, stronger businesses and more inclusive economic growth.

Tanui said achieving these objectives would require cooperation among government agencies, financial institutions, technology providers and businesses, with a focus on translating digital transformation into practical economic benefits for Kenyans.
