PawaPay Secures Payment Service Provider Licence in Mozambique
The company said it is among the first businesses licensed to operate as a PSP in Mozambique. The licence enables PawaPay to connect merchants with mobile money services used by customers across the country.
PawaPay has secured a Payment Service Provider (PSP) licence from the Bank of Mozambique through its local subsidiary, Quidexplus Mozambique, allowing the company to onboard merchants directly and provide regulated payment services in the country.
The company said it is among the first businesses licensed to operate as a PSP in Mozambique. The licence enables PawaPay to connect merchants with mobile money services used by customers across the country.
Mozambique has more than 12 million active mobile money accounts across three operators: M-Pesa, operated by Vodacom; E-Mola, operated by Movitel; and mKesh, operated by Tmcel.
“Mozambique has been one of the most active mobile money markets on the continent for years, but merchants have had no reliable way to operate here at scale. Becoming one of the first PSPs licensed by the Bank of Mozambique changes that. We can now onboard merchants directly and connect them to the operators their customers already use day to day.”
– Ilídio Matchebe, Mozambique Country Director, PawaPay
Founded in 2020, PawaPay operates across 23 African markets, processing around seven million transactions daily. Its services support businesses and organisations in sectors including ride-hailing, remittances, retail and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
The company said it has processed more than 3.5 billion transactions to date. The licence marks a step in its Mozambique operations, enabling it to establish direct merchant relationships and provide regulated payment services in the market.
