Airtel Africa Foundation and UNICEF Connect 977,670 Students to Digital Learning in Nigeria
The figures mark progress under the organisations’ partnership to expand access to digital education and improve connectivity for schools across the country.
The Airtel Africa Foundation and UNICEF have connected 1,668 schools to digital learning in Nigeria, providing access to educational resources for 977,670 students and 22,417 teachers.
The figures mark progress under the organisations’ partnership to expand access to digital education and improve connectivity for schools across the country.
During a recent visit to schools and youth programmes in Lagos, representatives observed students using technology to develop practical digital skills and explore artificial intelligence (AI). Participants included girls in secondary schools and students at a technical college preparing for future careers through technology-based learning.
Beyond school connectivity, the partnership is working to reduce the cost of accessing online educational resources. Airtel Africa Foundation provides zero-rated access to the Nigeria Learning Passport, YOMA and digital platforms operated by Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education, allowing users to access the services without incurring data charges for that access.
The Nigeria Learning Passport has reached 2.5 million students, while YOMA connects one million users to learning and development opportunities, according to the foundation.
The initiative also supports schools in submitting information through the Digital National Education Management Information System without data costs. The platform helps strengthen education planning and management by facilitating the submission of school-related information.
The foundation said the partnership with UNICEF and the Federal Government of Nigeria forms part of its efforts to widen access to quality education and digital inclusion. By combining connectivity with educational platforms and digital skills development, the initiative aims to help more young people access learning resources and participate in the digital economy.
The organisations say further work is needed to extend these benefits, but the progress recorded so far highlights the role of partnerships in expanding digital learning opportunities across Nigeria.
