Author: Akim Benamara

The programme aims to strengthen public-sector capacity to understand, develop and apply AI solutions in support of Zambia’s digital transformation agenda. The announcement was made in Lusaka on 30 October 2026.

SMART Zambia Institute , in partnership with Huawei Technologies  Zambia Limited, is set to launch a five-day Artificial Intelligence (AI) Empowerment Training Programme for government leaders and technologists. The programme aims to strengthen public-sector capacity to understand, develop and apply AI solutions in support of Zambia’s digital transformation agenda. The announcement was made in Lusaka on 30 October 2026.

The training begins on Monday, 2 November 2026, under the theme “Empowering Zambia’s AI Future: From Strategy to Practice.” It will bring together government officials, policymakers, ICT leaders and technical experts for strategic discussions and practical training in AI and its applications within public institutions. The organisers say the initiative reflects the growing importance of AI in modernising public administration, improving institutional efficiency, strengthening data-driven decision-making and enhancing public service delivery.

The programme will cover key areas of AI, including national AI strategy, large language models, AI-powered data centres, prompt engineering, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), AI agents and more. Huawei will provide the training free of charge, with experienced AI experts travelling from China to deliver it in person. Participants will engage with technical concepts, explore practical applications and develop a stronger understanding of how AI can address real-world institutional challenges.

The official opening ceremony will be attended by representatives of the SMART Zambia Institute and participating government institutions, the Chairman of Huawei’s Southern African Multi-Country Board, and a representative of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Zambia.

“Artificial intelligence presents significant opportunities to strengthen public institutions and accelerate digital transformation. Through this programme, Huawei is committed to sharing knowledge and practical expertise that can help empower Zambia’s public-sector professionals to translate technological innovation into meaningful outcomes for citizens.”

– Mr. Yang Hebin, Chairman, Huawei’s Southern African Multi-Country Board

Through the collaboration, Huawei says it aims to contribute to the development of local digital capabilities and support the effective adoption of emerging technologies across government institutions. The programme, it adds, underscores the importance of collaboration between government, the technology sector and international partners in building the knowledge and skills required for an increasingly digital economy. The Government of Zambia, through SMART Zambia Institute, said it remains committed to working with Huawei and its partners to explore opportunities in connectivity, digital infrastructure, skills development and technological innovation in support of national development.

SMART Zambia Institute, also known as the Electronic Government (e-Gov) Division, sits within the Office of the President and is responsible for managing and promoting electronic government services and processes, facilitating citizen access to those services, and coordinating e-government and ICT matters in public bodies. Huawei is described as a leading global provider of information and communications technology infrastructure and smart devices.
