MTN Uganda, a unit of South Africa’s MTN Group, has launched the first 5G network in the east African country. With approximately 15 million subscribers, MTN Uganda is the largest telecom firm in Uganda and competes with Bharti Airtel’s local unit.

The introduction of 5G brings faster data speeds and lower latency to Ugandan users. Sylvia Mulinge, MTN Uganda’s CEO, revealed the company’s ambitious plans to expand 5G coverage fully in Kampala by the end of 2024. Moreover, MTN aims to convert all its base sites in major cities to 5G over the next two years.

This significant milestone marks a new era for internet connectivity in Uganda, offering enhanced experiences and paving the way for digital advancements in the region.
