MTN Uganda has announced its key partnership with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) in hosting the esteemed International Telecommunication Union Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-24). The event is taking place at Speke Resort Munyonyo, a premier location that sets the stage for pivotal discussions in the telecommunications sector.
The symposium commenced with an engaging Industry Advisory Group session, where industry and private sector leaders, including MTN’s Group Chief Legal and Regulatory Officer Ms. Lele Modise (Moderator) and CEO Mulinge Sylvia M.B.S, shared their insights on navigating the complexities of the digital landscape. Key areas of focus for the coming decade were addressed, such as developing sustainable funding models and ensuring equitable contributions towards digital infrastructure development. Additionally, the session underscored the importance of secure, private, and affordable access to ICT for all, along with the need for adaptable regulations to keep pace with advancements in AI, Non-Terrestrial Networks, and future technologies like 6G.
The opening ceremony featured prominent figures including Uganda’s Vice President H.E. MAJ. (RTD) Jessica Alupo, who was the chief guest, and International Telecommunication Union Secretary General Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin. The Vice President emphasized the critical role of leveraging ICT for economic transformation, with a particular focus on the growing importance of AI.
The theme of collaboration was echoed by Mr. Nyombi Tembo, Chair of GSR-24, and Dr. Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, PhD, of ITU, highlighting its necessity for achieving impactful solutions in the ICT sector. Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Uganda’s Minister of ICT and National Guidance, welcomed participants to the pearl of Africa and reiterated Uganda’s commitment to ensuring affordable ICT access for all.
