NTRA and NTI Renew Agreement to Monitor Cell Tower Radiation for Public Safety

September 6, 2024

The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) and the National Telecommunication Institute (NTI) have renewed their agreement to periodically measure electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from cell towers, ensuring levels do not exceed globally permissible limits as specified in the protocol signed by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), the Ministry of Health and Population, and the Ministry of Environment.

This initiative is part of MCIT efforts to develop telecom infrastructure and enhance digital services through mobile networks, leveraging the increasing number of cell towers, including both main base stations and small cells.

The agreement, focused on maintaining environmental security and public safety, mandates the use of the latest technologies to measure EMR levels nationwide, adhering to international standards. It also aims to fulfill safety requirements while considering technological and environmental sustainability.

Under the agreement, the two parties will work to digitize the measurement system by automating all related procedures and securely making reports available through cloud computing. This aligns with the Digital Egypt strategy, implemented by MCIT.

Specialists, engineers, and experts from NTI, under NTRA supervision, will measure EMR levels of new and existing cell towers and assess their compliance with the specified safety standards. Additionally, the agreement includes periodic assessments to ensure ongoing compliance with these standards, reinforcing NTRA role in maintaining technical and performance quality in telecommunications services.
