NITDA acknowledged these efforts as a significant step towards creating a safer digital environment for Nigerians.

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA)  of Nigeria has commended Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for their compliance with the country’s Code of Practice for online platforms. In a report released on August 20th, 2025, NITDA highlighted key actions taken by these companies to ensure online safety and manage harmful content.

According to the report, the platforms received 754,629 registered complaints, leading to 58,909,012 content takedowns. Additionally, 429,493 accounts were suspended following user appeals, while 13,597,057 accounts were closed or deactivated.

NITDA acknowledged these efforts as a significant step towards creating a safer digital environment for Nigerians. The agency also noted that while the platforms are continually strengthening their trust and safety policies, the government will continue its engagement to ensure online safety, particularly for vulnerable groups like children.

Despite the positive progress, NITDA recognized that more work is needed, specifically in areas such as transparency in reporting, the speed of response to harmful content, and the robustness of appeal mechanisms. The agency concluded by stating its commitment to collaborating with other regulators, social media platforms, and stakeholders to enhance the effectiveness of these measures and foster a secure and conducive digital space for innovation and growth in Nigeria.
