Zimbabwe Launches Digital Centres in Matabeleland South to Boost Rural Development
The newly launched digital centres are designed to empower rural communities by providing access to learning opportunities, market information, entrepreneurship support, and essential family services.
The Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services of Zimbabwe has inaugurated two new digital centres in Matabeleland South as part of the government’s drive for inclusive digital transformation. The first centre was commissioned at Tshelanyemba on Tuesday, followed by the Mawabeni centre in Umzingwane District on Wednesday, 4 September 2025.
ICT Minister Hon. Tatenda Mavetera, alongside Deputy Minister Hon. Dingumuzi Phuti, officiated the events and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to leveraging technology for equitable development. The initiative received support from key ICT stakeholders, including NetOne, TelOne, Econet, Dandemutande, and the national regulator POTRAZ.
The newly launched digital centres are designed to empower rural communities by providing access to learning opportunities, market information, entrepreneurship support, and essential family services. The initiative is intended to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas.
Hon. Minister Mavetera emphasized that the rebranding of Community Information Centres into Digital Centres reflects their expanded mandate to integrate technology across communities. The project aligns with President Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, which aims to achieve an upper-middle-income economy while ensuring no citizen is left behind.
