Malawi Tourism Sector Strengthens Data Protection at MACRA Workshop
The workshop, organized by the Data Protection Authority, a unit under MACRA, focused on helping the tourism sector comply with Malawi’s Data Protection Act and adopt international best practices in information security.
Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) hosted a Workshop on Data Protection for the Tourism Sector in Blantyre, bringing together tourism professionals from across the country. The event highlighted the growing importance of safeguarding data in today’s increasingly digital world.
The workshop, organized by the Data Protection Authority, a unit under MACRA, focused on helping the tourism sector comply with Malawi’s Data Protection Act and adopt international best practices in information security. Participants explored the legal and ethical responsibilities of handling customer information and practical strategies for secure data storage, sharing, and management.
Key topics included the significance of protecting customer data in hospitality and travel operations, legal obligations under Malawi’s data protection framework, and ways to build trust with tourists through transparency and responsible data management.
The workshop is part of ongoing efforts by the Authority to raise awareness about the Data Protection Act 2024, educate stakeholders on the rights of data subjects, and clarify the duties of data processors and controllers. Ensuring that all key players in the digital ecosystem uphold high standards of digital responsibility is seen as essential for Malawi’s growth as a premier tourism destination in Africa.
