Ghana Launches Campaign for Continued Service on ITU Council and Radio Regulations Board in Baku

November 24, 2025
2 min read

Speaking to delegates, the Minister highlighted Ghana’s deep engagement with the ITU since joining the Union in 1957, noting the country’s continuous service on the ITU Council since 2002.

Ghana has formally launched its campaign for re-election to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU ) Council and the Radio Regulations Board (RRB), reinforcing its long-standing commitment to global digital governance. The announcement was made on 19 November 2025 in Baku, Azerbaijan, led by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP).

Speaking to delegates, the Minister highlighted Ghana’s deep engagement with the ITU since joining the Union in 1957, noting the country’s continuous service on the ITU Council since 2002. He underscored Ghana’s active contributions across Radiocommunication, Standardisation and Development sectors through Study Groups, major conferences and regional coordination efforts.

Hon. George also emphasised Ghana’s role as a continental leader in communications policy, pointing to the National Communications Authority’s status as an ITU-certified training partner since 2019 — a designation that supports capacity building across Africa.

The Minister urged Member States to support Ghana’s re-election bid and endorsed the continued service of Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, Director-General of the NCA, to the RRB for Region D for the 2027–2030 term. He noted that Ing. Fianko’s work in spectrum management, harmful interference resolution and regulatory compliance has been central to strengthening the Board’s technical decisions since his appointment in 2023.

In his remarks, Ing. Fianko thanked the Government of Ghana and Member States for their confidence during his first term. He reiterated his commitment to upholding the Radio Regulations with fairness, transparency and consistency, appealing for continued support to maintain experience and stability on the next RRB.
