Egypt Reviews Plans for $270 Million, 80MW Data Centre in Suez Canal Zone

Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Engineer Raafat Hendy, has met with the Chairman of Intro Holding Group  to review plans for establishing the “Chemist” data centre in the Sakhna Industrial Zone within the Suez Canal Economic Zone.

The planned facility will provide cloud services, Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities and digital transformation services. Intro Holding Group aims to make the project the first Tier III-rated data centre of its kind in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.

The first phase is planned to reach a total capacity of 80 megawatts, with investments estimated at $270 million. The facility is expected to serve major companies requiring advanced cloud and data processing capabilities.

During the meeting, Hendy highlighted the ministry’s efforts to create an investment-friendly environment for data centre development and encourage private-sector investment in facilities that meet international standards. He said Egypt’s capabilities position it to expand its data centre industry and support growing demand for data hosting, processing and cloud computing services.

The ministry also presented measures being taken to encourage companies to invest in Egypt’s data centre and cloud computing sectors, with the broader objective of strengthening the country’s position as a regional data centre hub.

The meeting reviewed the project’s executive procedures, including its implementation timeline. Engineering designs for the facility have not yet been completed, while Intro has signed contracts with several suppliers for equipment and other infrastructure required for the project.

The meeting was attended by Ahmed Badawi, Chairman of the Communications and Information Technology Committee in Egypt’s House of Representatives, alongside senior officials from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
