Luno Cuts Payment Integration Workload With MoneyHash Infrastructure

The impact has been significant. Luno has cut the engineering time spent maintaining payment integrations, reduced the time needed to launch local payment options, and recovered one in four deposits that might otherwise have been lost.

Luno,  the global crypto and investment platform founded in Africa, is using MoneyHash ’s payment infrastructure to simplify how it manages payments and support its continued growth across markets.

For Luno, growth had brought a familiar challenge. Every new market and payment option added another connection for its teams to build, maintain and monitor. With more than 25 payment provider and local bank connections, payments were taking up engineering time that could otherwise be spent on Luno’s core products and customer experience.

Luno worked with MoneyHash to change that. By bringing its payment providers together through MoneyHash, Luno can manage payments more centrally, introduce local payment options faster and improve how transactions perform without having to build and maintain every connection separately.

The impact has been significant. Luno has cut the engineering time spent maintaining payment integrations, reduced the time needed to launch local payment options, and recovered one in four deposits that might otherwise have been lost.

Making More Payments Work

Founded in 2021, MoneyHash is built around a simple idea: businesses should be able to choose and manage the payment providers they need without adding the same level of complexity behind the scenes.

By bringing providers, routing and payment operations into one place, MoneyHash gives teams greater control over payment performance while reducing the work required to manage it. For businesses expanding across markets, that flexibility can make it easier to adapt to local payment needs without rebuilding their payment setup each time.

“Luno has built an impressive business from Africa and taken it across markets, while keeping the customer experience at the center of its growth. Payments need to keep pace with that kind of ambition. Our role is to take the complexity out of managing multiple payment providers, so Luno’s teams can move faster, improve payment performance and keep their focus on building for their customers.”

– Nader Abdelrazik, Co-founder and CEO, MoneyHash

For Luno, that approach is already translating into measurable results. With MoneyHash, Luno can direct transactions across available payment providers based on how they are performing and try an alternative route when appropriate. This has helped Luno recover one in four deposits that might otherwise have been lost.

At the same time, the simpler setup has reduced the engineering time required to maintain payment connections, and helped Luno bring local payment options to new markets faster.

From African Roots to Multi-Market Scale

Founded in Africa in 2013, Luno has grown into a global crypto and investment platform serving millions of customers across multiple markets. That growth also changed what Luno needed from its payment setup.

Customers in different markets expect to fund their accounts using payment options they know and trust. For Luno, supporting those preferences meant working with multiple payment providers and banks, each with its own connection, processes and reporting. Over time, maintaining that setup demanded more attention from Luno’s engineering and payments teams.

MoneyHash gave Luno a simpler way to manage it. Luno can manage multiple payment connections through MoneyHash and see how payments are performing in one place.

That has made it easier to introduce new payment options as Luno enters or develops markets, while reducing the day-to-day work required from its engineering teams.

“Luno is a crypto and investment company – that is our core service to customers. Having MoneyHash handle our payment integrations meant our internal teams didn’t have to spend capacity managing payment rails. Because payments are handled by a trusted partner whose core focus is payment infrastructure, we can focus our engineering energy where it belongs: on revenue generation and building products for our users.”

– Cornel Smit, Head of Payments, Luno

Payments That Keep Pace With Growth

The work between MoneyHash and Luno shows what payment infrastructure can look like when it grows with the business.

For Luno, adding a market or a new payment option no longer has to mean adding the same level of engineering work behind it. Its teams have a more flexible foundation for managing providers, improving payment performance and adapting to local needs.

For MoneyHash, Luno is also an example of why payment orchestration matters in diverse markets such as Africa, where businesses need to combine global scale with payment options and providers that work locally.

As Luno continues to grow, the focus remains simple: payments should support that growth, not slow it down.
