NTRA Approves Regulatory Framework to Establish Data Centers in Egypt

The National Telecom Regulatory Authority of Egypt (NTRA) approved a regulatory framework to establish data centers as well as provide cloud computing services. In fact, this step comes in line with the State’s strategy to uphold digital transformation. It also aims to attract and increase investments in this field, in addition to optimize the use of Egypt’s geographic location and reinforce its strategic position as a regional as well a global pivot point for data movement. Furthermore, this measure was taken by NTRA to amplify Egypt’s position as a gate connecting Africa and the Middle East to Europe, making the country one of the most promising markets in the rapidly-growing scope of data centers.

During the previous period of time, NTRA had studied many global modules and practices, considered to be the best, in terms of establishing data centers and providing cloud computing services. Several meetings and sessions with local as well as global corporations working in this field were also held by NTRA, to come up with the optimum regulatory policies applicable in global markets as well as appropriate for Egypt’s market. In fact, a regulatory framework was set and approved to act as facilitating tool for business procedures of data centers. The said framework was also set to provide the investment facilitations necessary for this scope. It is worth noting that such a framework aims to polarize giant data centers to invest in Egypt’s market, in an attempt to have more investments in cloud computing and e-content services.

This would consequently provide new vacancies in terms of establishing as well as operating data centers and their relevant facilities. So as to be mentioned, the regulatory framework would contribute greatly to fostering the Government’s plan of digital transformation and e-services’ provision to citizens. This objective could be easily achieved through data center apps, where e-transactions could be smoothly and rapidly carried out via quick access to content hosted in such centers across the Arab Republic of Egypt.
