Peter Ndegwa the Chief Executive Officer of Safaricom talked about the company’s several achievments ahead of the release of its Half Year Results.
“We are one year into our new strategy which places customers firmly at the center of our business, and we are pleased with the strong performance we have announced this morning. Our transformation agenda is delivering early wins, fostering collaboration amongst staff leading to quicker decision making, increased efficiencies and faster resolutions bringing us closer to our customers.
The execution of the five-year strategy, that reaffirms our commitment to be a sustainable business that positively impacts social, governance and environmental change, is on course to unlock our next phase of growth and support our transition from a telco to a purpose-led technology company by 2025. Our purpose of Transforming Lives and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) sit at the heart of our business strategy and informs everything we do for our customers and stakeholders.
During this period, we officially set up Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC as a subsidiary of Safaricom PLC in readiness for commercial launch in Ethiopia in 2022. We are committed to building a high-quality mobile network in Ethiopia and giving citizens in all regions access to better connectivity starting in 2022. Safaricom PLC is currently in the process of setting up our operations, preparing detailed plans for operational readiness amongst other requirements ahead of our commercial launch next year. We are in contact with relevant authorities in Ethiopia updating them as per our license obligations.
We look forward to launching Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC commercial operations as projected while cognizant of the current evolving situation in Ethiopia as we proceed with our plans adapting to and assessing the situation as it evolves.
My sincere gratitude to all our Safaricom staff for working diligently during a tough and uncertain period which together we managed to accomplish the big milestone of winning the telecommunications licence in Ethiopia.
I would like to thank our Board for the continuous support they have accorded to me and my leadership team. To all our stakeholders, I thank you for your confidence in Safaricom, we are excited about the possibilities and the opportunities that lie ahead.”
