Telecom Egypt has fulfilled its agreement with St Helena Government (SHG) to link the island to the world via the Equiano submarine cable system, bringing high-speed internet connectivity and fostering economic growth.

St Helena Government aims to maximize the cable’s potential and quickly utilize the new connection to establish a local network covering the entire island, offering high-speed fiber-optic services to homes and businesses.

Stretching 1,140 km, the submarine cable connects St. Helena Island to Telecom Egypt’s network, extending along the African coast, connecting to Portugal and South Africa. Initially providing a capacity of 400 GB, the system can expand using advanced chipsets, reaching capacities of several terabits.

The submarine cable system ensures efficient and cost-effective communication solutions to meet the island’s growing capacity needs.

The collaboration between Telecom Egypt and the St. Helena government offers a “Dynamic Circuit Network” feature, guaranteeing stable capacities to the government’s partners. Telecom Egypt has also provided support in network equipment and submarine cable installation.

Mark Brooks, Minister for the Treasury, Infrastructure, and Sustainable Development, expressed that the project transforms life and business in St. Helena by introducing high internet speeds and capacities for the first time in history. It opens up new opportunities for economic growth and improved service delivery in sectors like healthcare, education, social care, business, tourism, and e-commerce.

Mohamed Nasr, MD and CEO of Telecom Egypt, highlighted the project’s significant international communication capacities that will elevate the island’s quality of life. He emphasized Telecom Egypt’s expansion outside the Middle East and North Africa region, aiming to enhance international presence by providing submarine cable solutions globally.

With extensive experience in the submarine cable industry and a dedicated team, Telecom Egypt continues to contribute to international infrastructure, serving as the partner of choice for over 160 major submarine cable operators. Their commitment to delivering state-of-the-art solutions locally and internationally drives their success in the telecommunications sector.
