TikTok Launches First Sub-Saharan Africa Safety Advisory Council to Enhance Platform Safety

September 5, 2024

Author: Joyce Onyeagoro

TikTok has launched its first-ever Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) Safety Advisory Council, a significant step towards ensuring that the platform remains a safe and inclusive space for millions of users across the region. This marks the first time a tech platform in SSA has established such a council, aimed at addressing safety challenges specific to the region.

Building on the global network of Safety Advisory Councils established since 2020, TikTok’s new SSA Council will bring together independent experts from various fields, including youth safety, free expression, and hate speech. These experts will collaborate closely with TikTok to develop policies and solutions that address current safety concerns while anticipating future challenges.

This initiative reinforces TikTok’s commitment to creating a safe, positive environment, leveraging regional insights to shape its approach to content safety and platform integrity across Africa.
