The industry’s brightest minds and most ambitious leaders gathered under one roof, each bringing their unique insights and visions for Africa’s digital future.
And TechAfrica News was right there at the heart of it all, front and center! It was a rewarding day for our team as we hit the ground running, engaging with industry leaders, uncovering emerging trends, and capturing the highlights to keep our audience up-to-date on all the latest happenings in Africa’s tech landscape and deliver a comprehensive report to our audience.
Opening Highlights
The opening address set the stage for what promises to be an exceptional event. Hon. Solly Malatsi, Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies for the Republic of South Africa, delivered the ministerial welcome address, emphasizing Africa’s digital future and the essential role of connectivity. The room was filled with anticipation as attendees from all corners of the industry, ready to dive into the sessions and discussions planned for the day.
In his message he emphasized South Africa’s commitment to building a robust digital economy and underscored that this vision requires more than government-led initiatives, but concerted efforts from all sectors.
He also referenced studies showing the incredible impact of digital inclusion on economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa, noting that full internet penetration could boost annual economic growth by an additional 1.5 percent, creating millions of jobs and lifting over 44 million people out of poverty.
“We cannot achieve this vision through government efforts alone. It requires collaboration across the sector. I invite all our partners to bring their expertise, ideas, and solutions to advance Africa’s digital future.”
– Hon. Solly Malatsi, Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Republic of South Africa.
True to form, our Founder and Chief editor at TechAfrica News, Akim Benamara was actively involved, moderating three insightful panels: Emerging Technologies Paving the Way for the Future of Connectivity & The Network, Accelerating Economic Prosperity in Africa: Leveraging AI for Sustainable Growth, and Connecting Africa’s Next Billion: Scaling Africa’s Digital Infrastructure. Each session brought together industry pioneers to discuss the trends, challenges, and innovations shaping Africa’s digital landscape, advancing connectivity, data infrastructure, and telecom growth.
In the panel session that brought together Akim Benamara, Tobechukwu Okigbo, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Nigeria Plc., and Mark Williams, Partner at Through Line Advisors, they discussed the importance of unlocking the potential of African nations by improving access to finance, making investments attractive, and fostering a mindset shift across the region. The speakers emphasized the need for strategic de-risking of investments and robust political will to drive meaningful change. They also addressed the challenge of unfair risk perceptions that deter investors and explored ways to build a supportive ecosystem that encourages sustainable development and positions Africa as a compelling investment destination.
On the sidelines of the event, Liquid Intelligent Technologies, part of Cassava Technologies, announced the renewal of its partnership with the Western Cape Government. This collaboration aims to further extend connectivity throughout the province, advancing the “Citizen-Centric Digital Transformation” initiative. With an investment exceeding R2 billion over the next seven years, Liquid South Africa plans to significantly enhance high-speed internet access for the public, including the addition of more free Wi-Fi hotspots. This expansion will play a crucial role in making digital resources more accessible, reinforcing connectivity as a pillar for regional growth and development.
We also had the privilege of meeting with numerous industry leaders and exhibitors, and we extend our sincere thanks to each of them for taking the time to speak with us and share their insights.
With Day One off to such a strong start, we are eagerly looking forward to what Day Two has in store.
