Cameroon Regulator Investigates Service Disruptions Across Major Mobile Networks in Cameroon

Cameroon’s mobile networks face disruptions from power shortages and fiber breaks, prompting ART’s intervention.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ART) of Cameroon has alerted the public to the recent decline in the quality of mobile electronic communication services provided by major operators, including MTN Cameroon, ORANGE Cameroon, and CAMTEL, across their 2G/3G/4G networks. ART’s inspections have revealed that this deterioration stems from several key issues, notably insufficient electrical power in the operators’ current networks and challenges in supplying fuel to technical sites, especially in major urban areas. Moreover, repeated fiber optic cable disruptions on parts of the national network have exacerbated the situation.

In response, MTN Cameroon and ORANGE Cameroon have mobilized technical teams, working closely with CAMTEL to swiftly restore optimal network functionality. Meanwhile, ART has been instructed by the government to conduct an operational audit of CAMTEL’s national fiber optic infrastructure. Early findings from this audit indicate that the network is in a state of ongoing degradation, prompting a call for reassessment of its maintenance conditions.

Public authorities are now committed to not only improving the maintenance of the national network but also rehabilitating and expanding it to enhance performance. ART has further assured that it is closely monitoring the operators’ annual investment plans aimed at extending network coverage and improving service quality for consumers throughout Cameroon.
