UNOOSA Hosts Key Space Law Advisory Mission in Morocco, Fostering National Space Governance
The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) recently conducted a Space Law Technical Advisory Mission in Morocco, providing a crucial platform to enhance national space governance. This one-day event, part of the broader Space Law Project, aimed to inform Moroccan government officials of the strategic benefits and significance of establishing a national space law framework. The discussions emphasized essential legal aspects including authorization, supervision, registration, and space debris mitigation.
The session gathered legal experts from multiple countries, including France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, who shared valuable insights on several critical space law issues. Among the key topics discussed were the purpose and scope of national space law, its alignment with international space obligations, and the importance of establishing clear regulations for space activities. This included discussions on the processes for authorization and licensing of space-related ventures and the continuing supervision of these activities by national authorities.
Other areas of focus included state responsibilities regarding liability and the registration of space objects, ensuring that space operations are conducted in compliance with international agreements. Industry representatives also contributed by sharing perspectives on navigating the diverse national licensing procedures across countries. The issue of space debris mitigation was another major point of discussion, underscoring the need for responsible space operations to preserve the space environment.
The event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Government of Morocco, the Government of Italy, Sapienza University of Rome, and the Center for Remote Sensing (CRTS). Funded by the Italian Government through Sapienza University, the mission underscored the importance of global cooperation in shaping robust national space legislation to meet the demands of the evolving space sector.
