Burkina Faso Aims to Bridge Digital Divide, Embarks on AI Localization Journey with UNDP
A key focus of the initiative is to ensure adherence to regulatory and ethical guidelines in AI development and deployment.
The Ministry of Digital Transition, Postal and Electronic Communications (MTDPCE) held a significant meeting on Friday, July 4, 2025, with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to discuss an innovative global initiative aimed at promoting the responsible and inclusive use of artificial intelligence (AI) in developing countries.
Dr. Aminata ZERBO/SABANE, Minister of Digital Transition, Postal and Electronic Communications, received Eloi KOUADIO IV, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Burkina Faso, for the crucial discussions.
The core of the meeting revolved around a UNDP project designed to integrate local languages into AI systems and bolster national technical capabilities. A key focus of the initiative is to ensure adherence to regulatory and ethical guidelines in AI development and deployment.
“This is an initiative that aims to value the tool of artificial intelligence, while ensuring to prevent potential drifts. It integrates regulatory and ethical dimensions, with a focus on building the capacities of technicians to promote responsible artificial intelligence. Particular attention is paid to a critical aspect: the digitalization of local languages, in order to make this tool accessible to the majority of the population of the country.”

During the exchange, Minister ZERBO/SABANE highlighted Burkina Faso’s ongoing efforts in its digital strategy and current initiatives. She expressed her appreciation for UNDP’s proposal, recognizing its potential to strengthen existing national actions.
To facilitate collaboration and ensure the initiative aligns with national priorities, the Minister instructed the immediate establishment of a technical team that will work closely with the UNDP.
