2 min read

Mutati described the collaboration as a defining moment for financial insurance inclusion in Zambia, underscoring its potential to address long-standing challenges in convenience, trust, and access.

Professional Insurance Corporation Zambia (PICZ)  and Airtel Mobile Money  have announced a strategic partnership aimed at expanding access to insurance through digital platforms. The launch event, held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Lusaka, was graced by the Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati, MP.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mutati emphasized that insurance is not a product but a lifestyle that should be kept simple, he states that it’s not about technology but about the people. PPIZ summarized this approach as Insurance ya Bonse, reflecting the partnership’s focus on inclusivity.

Mutati described the collaboration as a defining moment for financial insurance inclusion in Zambia, underscoring its potential to address long-standing challenges in convenience, trust, and access.

“These foundations will break the barriers of cost and distance, including the barrier of bureaucracy.”

Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati, MP, Minister of Technology and Science, Zambia.

The minister also highlighted the need to raise Zambia’s insurance penetration, currently at 6%, calling it totally unacceptable. He stressed the government’s commitment to providing an enabling framework through its digital transformation strategy, which incorporates technologies such as Artificial Intelligence to accelerate adoption.

As part of this strategy, the government plans to expand national connectivity to 96% by 2026, ensuring broader access to digital insurance services. Mutati also drew attention to cybersecurity initiatives, commending Airtel Money’s recently launched “Spam Alert” system, which filters approximately 400,000 spam messages and has achieved a 92.6% security rate. He noted that Zambia ranks among Africa’s best-performing countries in cyber resilience.

The partnership between Airtel Money and PPIZ is expected to spearhead campaigns promoting insurance awareness, digital literacy, and skills development. Mutati praised the collaboration with local businesses, describing it as the best way to find local solutions for local problems.
