Kenya’s Government Launches Free Public WiFi in Four West Pokot Schools to Bridge Digital Divide
The initiative was officially presided over by Julius Bitok, the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Basic Education.
On Thursday, four schools in West Pokot County—Ortum Mixed Secondary, Holy Rosary Girls Secondary, Saint Francis Ortum Boys Comprehensive, and Saint Bernadette Ortum Girls Comprehensive—celebrated the launch of free public WiFi. The initiative was officially presided over by Julius Bitok, the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Basic Education.
The event was attended by notable guests, including PS Joel Arumonyang, Leonard Kirui, the Regional ICT Officer from the ICT Authority , as well as local leaders and education stakeholders.
This rollout is part of a broader government plan to boost digital learning, foster innovation, and close the digital gap for students in rural and underserved communities. By giving these schools dependable, high-speed internet, the initiative provides both students and teachers with greater access to online educational platforms and digital learning resources.
