South Sudan to Begin Fiber Optic Cable Project with Kenya in Early 2026 to Boost Connectivity
The plan was discussed during the 13th leadership meeting of the MOICT&PS, a project that is expected to significantly improve the country's connectivity and digital infrastructure.
The Ministry of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services (MOICT&PS) of the Republic of South Sudan, in collaboration with the World Bank, is set to begin laying a fiber optic cable from Kenya early next year. This announcement was made by Mabe Emmanuel, Secretary General of the Universal Service and Access Fund (USAF), on Thursday, August 7, 2025. The plan was discussed during the 13th leadership meeting of the MOICT&PS, a project that is expected to significantly improve the country’s connectivity and digital infrastructure.
According to Mabe Emmanuel, the Ministry, led by Minister Michael Makuei Lueth, is currently in the process of recruiting technical teams. These teams will be responsible for conducting the necessary feasibility studies and environmental assessments. The successful completion of these preparatory steps will pave the way for the groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for early next year. The fiber optic cable is a crucial project aimed at providing faster and more reliable internet access across South Sudan.
In a separate matter, the leadership meeting also addressed the future location of the Ministry’s headquarters. Discussions centered on the financing required for the renovation of the old “Radio-Juba” premises. This renovation, with an estimated cost of $4 million, will allow the Ministry to relocate its headquarters from its current congested venue to a more suitable space.
