Nigeria’s Telco 9mobile Steps Into a Digital-First Future, Rebrands as T2

Once launched as Etisalat Nigeria in 2008, the operator now enters its third identity in 17 years.

Lagos played host on Friday to the rebirth of one of Nigeria’s best-known telecom brands, as 9mobile shed its old identity to emerge as T2—a name its leadership says signals more than a logo change.

“This is not just a rebrand. It is a total evolution,” declared CEO Obafemi Banigbe, unveiling plans for T2 to operate as a fully digital telco powered by cloud, AI, and data-driven personalisation.

Backed by Lighthouse Telecoms since 2023, T2 is midway through a four-phase recovery plan—now entering “Transformation.” Recent milestones include a landmark roaming deal with MTN Nigeria to boost nationwide coverage and a refreshed executive team.

Chairman Thomas Etuh called the moment a “rebirth” after years of turbulence, thanking customers and regulators for staying the course. Minister of Communications Dr ‘Bosun Tijani welcomed the move but urged the company to match its bold new image with tangible innovation and service gains.

Once launched as Etisalat Nigeria in 2008, the operator now enters its third identity in 17 years. This time, it is betting on agility, digital lifestyle services, and Nigeria’s swelling base of startups and remote workers to reclaim market ground.
