Zambia Launches Mwelushi Communication Tower to Boost Connectivity in Lavushimanda
The tower, situated in Chief Chiundaponde approximately 100 kilometers from the district’s central business hub, is part of Phase III of the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority’s (ZICTA) nationwide communication tower project.
On Sunday, August 31, 2025, Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science, Honourable Felix C. Mutati, MP, officially launched the Mwelushi Communication Tower in Lavushimanda District. The tower, situated in Chief Chiundaponde approximately 100 kilometers from the district’s central business hub, is part of Phase III of the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority’s (ZICTA) nationwide communication tower project.
The Mwelushi Tower is expected to provide services to around 1,700 residents in the Bangweulu wetlands, enhancing communication and access to critical digital services. Earlier this year, ZICTA also commissioned the Muwela Communication Tower in the same wetlands, which now serves over 8,000 people.
With the new connectivity, communities in Chiundaponde and Mpumba chiefdoms will benefit from improved access to mobile money services, electronic vouchers under the Farmer Support Programme, and social cash transfer initiatives, thereby promoting financial inclusion. The tower will also support research, education, and other digital services, contributing to socio-economic development in the region.
