Key initiatives include the Ghana AI Practitioners Guide and a near-complete National AI Strategy, developed with support from the UK’s FCDO and expected to be launched later this year.

The Ministry for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has called on public relations and communications professionals to play a central role in promoting Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a driver of opportunity and empowerment.

At the 2025 PR Knowledge Sharing Conference on 2nd October at the Accra International Conference Centre, the Ministry emphasized AI’s growing role in daily life, from healthcare and education to business and mobile applications. The government’s digital transformation agenda aims to create a digitally inclusive, data-driven society, with AI deployed responsibly across sectors.

Key initiatives include the Ghana AI Practitioners Guide and a near-complete National AI Strategy, developed with support from the UK’s FCDO and expected to be launched later this year. Ghana has also signed a $1 billion agreement with the UAE to establish Africa’s first AI Innovation Hub in the Greater Accra Region.

The Ministry is working with academic institutions to develop Large Language Models (LLMs) in Ghanaian and African languages, including Twi, Ga, Ewe, Dagbani, Nzema, Kusasi, Yoruba, Hausa, Creole, and Swahili. These efforts aim to ensure AI solutions are locally relevant and culturally inclusive.

Highlighting Ghanaian innovation, the Ministry cited Moremi AI for early cancer detection, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and AI research from Google’s Accra lab supporting the company’s global addressing system. Communications professionals were encouraged to bridge the gap between technical AI developments and the public to foster understanding, ethical use, and socio-economic impact.
