Liberia Empowers Monrovia Students with Digital Safety and AI Awareness

The initiative forms part of LTA’s ongoing efforts to promote digital literacy, responsible technology use, and consumer protection among Liberia’s youth.

The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA),  through its Government and Consumer Affairs Department, held a Mini Summit on “Online Safety and Consumer Protection” engaging students from five secondary schools across Monrovia. The initiative forms part of LTA’s ongoing efforts to promote digital literacy, responsible technology use, and consumer protection among Liberia’s youth.

The interactive forum featured discussions on key digital safety topics such as online scams, cyberbullying, human trafficking, and artificial intelligence (AI). Students shared their views and experiences while learning practical ways to identify and prevent online risks. Panelists also highlighted the importance of using emerging technologies — including AI and ChatGPT — for positive educational and creative purposes rather than misuse.

LTA Consumer Manager, Mr. Lekpele M. Nyamalon, encouraged students to be proactive about their online experiences, stressing the importance of raising awareness and supporting peers facing digital threats. He noted that open dialogue and peer advocacy play a vital role in fostering safer online communities for young people.

The Mini Summit brought together students from St. Theresa’s Convent, Wells Hairston High School, Monrovia Central High School, Muslim Congress High School, and B.W. Harris Episcopal High School. It follows similar engagements launched two months ago in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, as part of LTA’s nationwide outreach campaign to equip young Liberians with knowledge and tools for safe, ethical, and innovative participation in the digital world.

Through initiatives like this, the LTA continues to strengthen its role in empowering Liberia’s next generation of digital citizens, ensuring they can navigate the internet responsibly while benefiting from the vast opportunities technology provides.
