Malawi Promotes Cyber Safety Culture as Part of Global Cybersecurity Awareness Month

The Malawi Computer Emergency Response Team (mwCERT), a unit under the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), has officially announced Malawi’s participation in the Global Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which is observed throughout October. The national campaign operates under the theme “Building Our Cyber Safe Culture” and aims to promote safe online practices while strengthening the country’s collective resilience against cyber threats. mwCERT underscored that online safety is not merely a technical issue but a crucial shared responsibility involving every stakeholder, from individual users to large-scale organizations.
The 2025 campaign is built around three core pillars designed to cultivate a lasting culture of cyber safety. These pillars are Awareness, which focuses on helping individuals understand cyber threats; Behavior, which encourages people to adopt and maintain safe online habits; and Resilience, which is about strengthening digital systems to effectively withstand and recover from cyber incidents. mwCERT emphasized that embracing these practices today is the fundamental path to building a more robust digital defense for the future of the nation.
In a national call to action, mwCERT urged the public, private institutions, and community organizations across Malawi to actively participate in all discussions and initiatives that promote strong cyber hygiene throughout October. Citizens are strongly encouraged to integrate cybersecurity into their daily lives by following several effective steps. These key tips include creating strong, unique passwords for all accounts, enabling multi-factor authentication for an extra layer of security, remaining vigilant against phishing attempts, and regularly updating all software and devices to patch vulnerabilities.
