South Sudan Joins Efforts to Establish Unified East African Telecom Network
The initiative, spearheaded by EACO, aims to create a unified telecommunications network that will significantly reduce the cost of roaming charges among East African countries.
The Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, Michael Makuei Lueth, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the East African Communications Organization (EACO) in its efforts to establish a One Network Area (ONA) across the region.
The initiative, spearheaded by EACO, aims to create a unified telecommunications network that will significantly reduce the cost of roaming charges among East African countries. By implementing a single network framework, member states seek to ease the financial burden currently faced by consumers and operators due to high cross-border communication costs.
During discussions with EACO officials, the Minister highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in advancing digital connectivity and promoting economic integration through affordable communication services. The meeting also addressed persistent challenges affecting cross-border telecommunications, including frequency interference and incidents of false roaming, which continue to impact service quality and user experience in border regions.
The government’s support for EACO’s One Network Area initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance regional connectivity, facilitate trade, and foster closer integration among East African nations through improved access to reliable and cost-effective communication infrastructure.
