TNM Celebrates 30 Years of Connecting Malawi with Cutting-Edge Technology
The milestone event brought together government officials, corporate partners, TNM staff, and customers to reflect on the company’s achievements and outline its vision for the future.
TNM, Malawi’s pioneering mobile network operator, marked 30 years of transformative growth and connection, celebrating three decades of innovation, digital advancement, and community impact. The milestone event brought together government officials, corporate partners, TNM staff, and customers to reflect on the company’s achievements and outline its vision for the future.
From its humble beginnings in Lindi with the first brick mobile phones, TNM has consistently led the way in introducing groundbreaking technologies to Malawi. The company was the first to launch postpaid services, SMS, GPRS, mobile internet, 3G, 4G, and even 4.5G in the country. Today, TNM continues its leadership with the deployment of 5G, offering speeds of over 280 Mbps, and cutting-edge services like Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and unlimited data bundles through its new “Velocity” platform.
TNM has also played a critical role in Malawi’s financial and social ecosystem. Its mobile financial services, including the Empamba platform, enable microloans, secure transactions, and widespread access to digital financial tools. In recent years, TNM has facilitated hundreds of billions in social cash transfers to vulnerable communities, supporting inclusive growth and economic empowerment across the country.
Beyond technology, TNM has contributed significantly to national development. Over 30 years, the company has invested over a trillion kwacha in infrastructure, technology, and human capital, and paid billions in taxes, helping fund roads, hospitals, and public services. TNM has also championed education, sports, and community development, sponsoring initiatives like the TNM Super League, which has nurtured local football talent for nearly two decades.
Speaking at the celebration, TNM leaders emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation, stating that the next 30 years will focus on expanding digital services, fostering local talent, and delivering cutting-edge technology to every corner of Malawi. TNM currently serves approximately 7 million Malawians daily, reaching over 40% of the market and continuing to grow.
Through partnerships with the government, strategic investments in infrastructure, and dedication to social impact, TNM has not only transformed telecommunications in Malawi but has also created a platform for long-term national growth.
“Today we celebrate our past, but we are also focused on the future. We are committed to ensuring every Malawian has access to the best digital and financial services, leaving no one behind,” TNM representatives said during the anniversary event.
