The initiative aligns with the government’s SMART Zambia Agenda, which focuses on digital governance, innovation promotion, and universal access to technology.

The Ministry of Technology and Science,  in collaboration with Infratel,  has launched the 2025 Infratel Girls in Tech Bootcamp, a flagship initiative aimed at empowering young girls to lead Zambia’s digital transformation. The event, held at the Lusaka Legacy Resort on 18 November 2025 under the theme “Empowering the Next Generation of Innovators,” provides a platform for girls to develop skills, confidence, and innovation in technology.

Officiating the event, Minister of Technology and Science Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati emphasized that girls should be defined by their intellect and capabilities, not gender. Highlighting examples of Zambian girls excelling in robotics and innovation competitions, the Minister stressed that opportunity should be available to all, and that young girls must be encouraged to compete on global platforms.

The Bootcamp addresses long-standing challenges in Zambia’s tech ecosystem, including low female representation in ICT careers, limited exposure to global innovation platforms, and societal perceptions that technology is male dominated. By targeting Grade 11 students—a critical stage for career decisions—the program seeks to cultivate a new generation of female technologists, innovators, and problem-solvers.

Dr. Evans Silavwe, CEO of Infratel, highlighted the persistent gender gap in the tech workforce, noting that only 30% of ICT employees are female. He emphasized that sustained mentorship and hands-on training are critical to building a stronger, more diverse technology sector.

Infratel has also launched an Innovation Hub at the University of Zambia, providing mentorship, technical resources, and ongoing support to ensure the impact of the Bootcamp extends beyond the event. Participants are encouraged to create solutions tailored to Zambia’s unique needs, while gaining access to international competitions and global innovation platforms.

The initiative aligns with the government’s SMART Zambia Agenda, which focuses on digital governance, innovation promotion, and universal access to technology. By providing platforms, mentorship, and exposure, the Bootcamp aims to develop future women leaders, engineers, founders, and innovators, positioning girls at the forefront of Zambia’s digital future.

The 2025 Infratel Girls in Tech Bootcamp is a landmark step toward a digitally inclusive Zambia where girls are recognized as drivers of innovation and agents of change.
