Wits University Launches New Postgraduate Cybersecurity Degrees to Strengthen Africa’s Digital Future
These new offerings strategically position Wits as a leading institution in cybersecurity education on the African continent.
The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University) has announced the launch of two new postgraduate degrees in cybersecurity, effective from the 2026 academic year. These programmes are designed to cultivate highly skilled professionals essential for safeguarding Africa’s digital future.
The two new, fully accredited programmes are the Bachelor of Science Honours (BScHons) and the Master of Science (MSc) in Cybersecurity. Both are currently open for applications on the Wits online system, with a closing date of 31 December 2025. These degrees combine a rigorous academic foundation with practical, real-world applications, preparing graduates for advanced careers in cybersecurity, data protection, and trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI).
The School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics (CSAM) highlighted that the qualifications will focus on advanced cybersecurity principles and technologies, the use of AI and machine learning for digital security, the ethical and legal aspects of information security, and applied research addressing local and global cybersecurity challenges.
These new offerings strategically position Wits as a leading institution in cybersecurity education on the African continent. The programmes are delivered in collaboration with two globally recognized organizations: the CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security in Germany, and MWR CyberSec.
The Head of Consultancy at MWR CyberSec emphasized that developing local expertise is crucial for strengthening South Africa’s resilience against evolving cyber threats, underscoring the initiative’s importance in building the next generation of cybersecurity experts.
Similarly, a tenure-track faculty member from CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security expressed delight in partnering with Wits, noting that strengthening global cybersecurity demands strong international collaborations. They see immense potential in supporting the development of highly skilled professionals in South Africa, which will help cultivate new research talent and expand global knowledge exchange for a more resilient digital future.
Wits University’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal stated that cybersecurity is one of the defining challenges of the current era. These programmes position Wits at the forefront of digital innovation and resilience in Africa, creating pathways for students to engage with global expertise while simultaneously addressing the urgent cybersecurity needs of society.
The Dean of the Faculty of Science added that the programmes will enhance South Africa’s capability to protect critical infrastructure, data, and information systems, thereby contributing significantly to the country’s burgeoning digital economy.
The partnership with CISPA was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), establishing a framework for joint research, academic exchanges, and the co-supervision of postgraduate students in fields including cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cryptography. The Head of International Affairs and Science Relations at CISPA noted that this collaboration will foster opportunities for CISPA researchers to engage with the African scientific community and will open up new international research perspectives and trajectories.
