At AfricaCom 2025 in Cape Town, Akim Benamara, Chief Editor and Founder of TechAfrica News, spoke with Sudhir Juggernath, CEO of Telcables South Africa, about the company’s transformative role in Africa’s digital landscape. From driving local cloud adoption to enhancing network resilience, Juggernath detailed how Telcables is shaping the continent’s journey toward a more connected and digitally empowered future.

Talking Points
  • 0:19AFRICACOM 2025 – Telcables’ Focus on Value and Services
  • 1:09“Clouds2Africa” – Localized Cloud Infrastructure
  • 2:26Benefits of Local Cloud Solutions – Reliability, Cost, Data Sovereignty
  • 4:29Network Upgrades and Edge Computing
  • 5:38Alternate Connectivity – Resilience During Submarine Cable Disruptions
  • 6:51Enabling SMEs and Digital Innovation – Infrastructure as a Service
  • 8:14Empowering the Unconnected – Driving Africa’s Digital Transformation

From Connectivity to Value-Added Services

Juggernath emphasized that Telcables is shifting focus from network reach alone to delivering tangible value through services. “Last year we spoke about being the most interconnected operator in Africa. This year, our theme is ‘Clouds2Africa,’” he said, highlighting a renewed focus on offering African businesses localized, reliable cloud solutions.

Clouds2Africa: Localized Solutions for African Needs

The “Clouds2Africa” initiative is designed to provide cloud infrastructure within the continent, keeping data local and aligned with data sovereignty principles. By reducing reliance on global hyperscalers, the solution ensures continuity even during global connectivity disruptions. “There is no data going to another continent,” Juggernath stated.

“So you will find that our Clouds2Africa solution, the node or the infrastructure,is located in Africa, in the African countries. We want to try and align with data sovereignty. We’re going to try to keep the data in-country and on the continent. The plan for 2025 and 2026 is to roll out more cloud infrastructure solutions locally in Africa. That is the whole idea: we want to build cloud solutions that are relevant to the African market and keep the information and data local.”

-Sudhir Juggernath, CEO, Telcables South Africa

Real-world examples illustrate the benefits. When recent issues affected global hyperscaler networks, Telcables customers using local infrastructure experienced no disruption, demonstrating the reliability and accessibility of locally hosted services. The platform supports scalability, allowing customers, from a single user to hundreds,to deploy virtual machines, applications, and storage in African data centers.

Investment in Infrastructure and Edge Computing

Telcables recently upgraded its national network from 500 Gbps to 800 Gbps and opened a new point of presence (POP) at TerraCore Samarand. This expansion improves latency, enhances performance, and positions Telcables closer to end users, enabling faster and more reliable access to digital services.

Alternate Paths and Resilient Connectivity

Telcables stands out as an alternate connectivity provider. As a majority consortium member of the WACS and SACS cable systems and a partner on the Monet cable system with Google, Telcables provides backup routes to ensure business continuity in the event of submarine cable disruptions. Juggernath explained that this approach guarantees uninterrupted access for international carriers and enterprises, even during incidents on major routes like the Red Sea or West Africa.

Enabling SMEs and Digital Innovation

Looking ahead, Telcables is developing infrastructure-as-a-service solutions, enabling customers to deploy software, platforms, and networking services locally. The company’s strategy aims to empower carriers, SMEs, and entrepreneurs by reducing capital expenditure requirements and fostering innovation at an affordable cost. “Our passion is about connecting the unconnected, but empowering them as well,” Juggernath affirmed.

Driving Africa’s Digital Transformation

Through its investments in cloud, network resilience, and local infrastructure, Telcables South Africa is enabling Africans to access digital content, build businesses, and scale solutions across the continent. The company’s commitment aligns with the broader vision of African-led, African-centered digital transformation, ensuring that technology solutions are accessible, reliable, and locally relevant.
