Gabon has taken a major step toward modernizing its education system with the official launch of the pilot phase of the “Connected School” programme. The Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalisation and Innovation introduced the initiative on 3 December 2025, alongside key partners Huawei and Moov Africa–Gabon Télécom. The project aligns with the national vision of President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, who has identified digital technology as a central lever for reducing educational disparities and expanding opportunities for young people.
The pilot phase is being implemented in two secondary schools: Léon Mba High School in Libreville and the Public High School of Oyem. Each school has been equipped with a modern connected smart screen featuring high-definition audiovisual tools, a secure collaborative platform and high-speed internet connectivity. The technology enables students in Oyem to attend classes delivered in Libreville in real time, interact directly with teachers and classmates, and access the same level of instruction as learners in the capital.
The system supports live transmission of lessons, interactive digital content, real-time question-and-answer sessions and classroom recordings that can be used for revision. It also gives students and teachers access to a suite of integrated digital learning resources. The first successful link between Libreville and Oyem marks a significant step toward building a national network of connected schools, where physical distance no longer limits access to quality education.
The government plans to expand the programme gradually to additional institutions, reinforcing its commitment to using digital transformation as a catalyst for human development. Through the Connected School initiative, Gabon aims to harmonize learning standards, strengthen pedagogical quality and prepare its youth for the demands of a rapidly evolving digital world.
