Speaking during a high-level engagement with regional stakeholders in Abuja, Dr. Maida emphasized that Africa’s economic future is closely tied to digital cooperation and the seamless flow of data across borders.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC),  Dr. Aminu Maida, has reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to fostering a more integrated digital environment across the West African sub-region.

Speaking during a high-level engagement with regional stakeholders in Abuja, Dr. Maida emphasized that Africa’s economic future is closely tied to digital cooperation and the seamless flow of data across borders. He highlighted ongoing collaboration with the West Africa Telecommunications Regulators Assembly (WATRA) to harmonize policies aimed at reducing roaming charges and enhancing connectivity for citizens throughout the region.

Key Focus Areas Highlighted by Dr. Maida:

  • Regional Connectivity: NCC is prioritizing the completion of cross-border fiber optic links to ensure resilient internet access across neighboring countries.
  • Policy Harmonization: Efforts are underway to align regulatory frameworks, enabling telecommunications operators to scale services more efficiently across West Africa.
  • Infrastructure Security: Dr. Maida stressed the need for collective action against the vandalism of undersea cables and terrestrial fiber networks, which are vital to the digital economy.
  • Digital Inclusion: The Commission plans to leverage regional partnerships to expand affordable broadband access to underserved rural populations, ensuring inclusive participation in the digital economy.

“Our vision is clear: a West Africa where digital barriers are dismantled, and technology serves as a bridge for trade, education, and innovation. We are not just building networks; we are building a shared future.”

Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)

The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of the Nigerian government’s support for the Renewed Hope Agenda, recognizing the digital economy as a key driver for job creation, innovation, and national growth.
