Zimbabwe Inaugurates 15-Member National Libraries Council to Drive Modernisation
By modernising the library system, the Ministry aims to position libraries as dynamic hubs of knowledge and digital access that contribute meaningfully to Zimbabwe’s broader development agenda.
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Zimbabwe has officially inaugurated a 15-member National Library and Documentation Services (NLDS) Council at its Head Office in Harare. The ceremony was led by Minister Torerayi Moyo, marking a key milestone in efforts to modernise Zimbabwe’s national library system.
The newly appointed Council will be chaired by Agnes Chikonzo, Librarian at the University of Zimbabwe, while Innocent Chirisa, Vice Chancellor of Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University (ZEGU), will serve as Deputy Chairperson. The Council’s mandate includes advising the Minister on policy direction, regulatory frameworks, and the strategic transformation of library and information services across the country.
In his address, Hon. Prof. Moyo highlighted the critical role libraries play in ensuring equitable access to knowledge, promoting digital transformation, and supporting human capital development. He aligned the Council’s work with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), urging members to champion innovation, strengthen professionalism within the sector, and accelerate the shift toward technology-driven and inclusive library services.
The inauguration represents a significant step toward enhancing research capacity, lifelong learning, curriculum delivery, and national productivity.
