The initiative, initially proposed by CEO Tamru and implemented in collaboration with the GSMA, showcases Africa’s growing influence and innovation in the telecommunications sector.

Ethio Telecom  CEO Frehiwot Tamru, alongside leaders of Africa’s six most influential telecommunications companies (the G6), officially inaugurated the first-ever Africa Pavilion at MWC Barcelona, marking a historic milestone for the continent at the world’s largest mobile industry event. The initiative, initially proposed by CEO Tamru and implemented in collaboration with the GSMA, showcases Africa’s growing influence and innovation in the telecommunications sector.

Following the inauguration, the G6 leaders held a joint press briefing to outline their collaborative roadmap for advancing digital connectivity across Africa. CEO Frehiwot Tamru emphasized that the alliance is focused on bridging the digital usage gap through inclusive rural connectivity, affordable smart devices, and expanded digital financial services.

A major priority highlighted during the briefing is the development of African-centric Large Language Models (LLMs) to strengthen AI readiness and enhance the continent’s digital sovereignty. CEO Tamru stressed that robust and secure digital infrastructure is critical for Africa to fully harness the opportunities presented by the Artificial Intelligence era.

The collaboration aims to move innovations from pilot stages to continent-wide deployment, linking regional telecommunications growth with broader global expansion. The Africa Pavilion has generated strong excitement among visitors and delegates, who hailed it as a long-overdue representation of Africa’s digital identity and potential on the global technology stage.
