This shift aligns with MultiChoice’s strategy to develop a large-scale in-house streaming platform designed to meet both African and international consumer expectations.

MultiChoice,  part of CANAL+ SA , has announced plans to discontinue its Showmax streaming service following a comprehensive review of its operations. The decision, approved by the Showmax Board of Directors, comes as the company seeks to focus on financial discipline and optimize investments in a highly competitive, capital-intensive global streaming market.

According to the Group, Showmax’s substantial annual losses have become unsustainable, prompting the move to phase out the service. The company emphasized that the discontinuation will not involve retrenchments, with employees being supported through various transition options.

This shift aligns with MultiChoice’s strategy to develop a large-scale in-house streaming platform designed to meet both African and international consumer expectations. CANAL+ will continue investing in premium content, technological innovation, and strategic partnerships, reinforcing its leadership in the African entertainment sector.

The company reassured Showmax subscribers that they remain a priority and promised to share further details on expanded content offerings and platform upgrades in the near future.
