The introduction of the digital postcode system is expected to modernize postal operations while serving as a critical enabler for nationwide digital and economic development.
Dr. Bosun Tijani has announced that the Federal Executive Council (FEC), under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has approved the implementation of a GIS-enabled Alphanumeric Digital Postcode System for Nigeria. The initiative is part of the targets outlined in the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE Nigeria) Strategic Blueprint.
The system, developed in collaboration with NIPOST under the leadership of Tola Odeyemi, introduces a modern geospatial intelligent addressing solution aimed at improving accuracy nationwide. It is designed to enable faster and more reliable mail and parcel processing, while also supporting better national planning, emergency response, efficient logistics, e-commerce, and the delivery of government services.
Dr. Tijani emphasized that this initiative strengthens the foundational infrastructure needed to support Nigeria’s growing digital economy, ensuring that people, businesses, and services are more effectively connected across the country. He described the approval as a key milestone in creating an enabling environment for a modern, inclusive, and globally competitive digital economy.
