This initiative is part of Cameroon’s broader strategy to modernize its telecommunications infrastructure and promote economic development through improved digital connectivity.

The government of Cameroon has authorized the Ministry of Economy, Planning, and Regional Development  to sign a loan agreement with EXIMBANK-China  to fund the fourth phase of the country’s fiber-optic backbone expansion project. The loan, valued at approximately 1.35 billion RMB (around 108.4 billion CFA francs), is aimed at strengthening the nation’s digital infrastructure.

Signed on 6 March 2026 by President Paul Biya, the decree grants the ministry full authority to execute the agreement and mandates that it be registered, published urgently, and included in the official journal in both French and English.

The funding is expected to enhance nationwide broadband connectivity, support digital transformation initiatives, and improve internet accessibility for public, private, and government services throughout Cameroon.
