March 13, 2026
2 min read

MACRA Director General, Mayamiko Nkoloma, highlighted concerns from local TV broadcasters over the limited financial benefits from having their content carried on DStv and GOtv platforms.

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA)  recently hosted French media company Canal+  to discuss the broadcaster’s strategic plans following its acquisition of South Africa’s MultiChoice Group. The engagement focused on opportunities for Malawian consumers, local content development, and regulatory compliance as Canal+ integrates into the Malawi market. MACRA Board Chairperson, Chancy Gondwe, described the development as the start of a “new chapter” that could provide viewers with a broader range of content, while stressing the importance of adherence to local regulations.

MACRA Director General, Mayamiko Nkoloma, highlighted concerns from local TV broadcasters over the limited financial benefits from having their content carried on DStv and GOtv platforms. He encouraged Canal+ to invest in Malawi’s digital ecosystem, including initiatives that enhance local capacity and improve digital services. In response, Canal+ committed to ongoing engagement with local broadcasters on content monetization, emphasizing the value of expanded exposure across Africa and other markets.

During the visit, Canal+ executives also outlined plans to promote African talent across their 40-country network, expand service accessibility, and generate job opportunities within Malawi. The company noted challenges such as piracy and regulatory non-compliance by some competitors, stressing the need for a level playing field to ensure fair competition in the Malawian broadcasting sector.
