Angola Deepens Space Capabilities with First Earth Observation Satellite
This initiative represents a major milestone in Angola’s national space program, strengthening the country’s position among African nations advancing capabilities in the space sector.
An Angolan delegation led by Mário Augusto da Silva Oliveira, Minister of Telecommunications, Technologies and Social Communication, attended the official launch of the ANGEO-1 Earth Observation satellite project on March 16 at the Airbus Defence and Space facilities in Toulouse.
The ANGEO-1 satellite, designed as a high-performance system, will be developed by Airbus using its advanced S250 optical platform. The project marks the beginning of the construction and eventual deployment of Angola’s first satellite dedicated to Earth observation.
This initiative represents a major milestone in Angola’s national space program, strengthening the country’s position among African nations advancing capabilities in the space sector. ANGEO-1 is expected to enhance the country’s technological capacity and support a range of applications, including environmental monitoring and national development planning.
The presence of the minister highlights the strategic priority placed by the Angolan government on technological sovereignty and the expansion of its space capabilities. The delegation also included senior officials from the National Space Program Management Office (GGPEN), among them Director-General Zolana João, Deputy Director-General for the Scientific and Technical Area Vanya Pereira, Satellite Control Center Technical Director Amaro João, and ANGEO-1 Project Manager Luciano Lupedia, alongside other senior staff.
Senior representatives from the Angolan Embassy in France were also in attendance, underscoring the diplomatic and strategic importance of the project.
