Kenya and EU Strengthen Partnership on AI and Digital Infrastructure

The Government of Kenya and the European Union have strengthened their digital partnership, focusing on building secure, trusted, and future-ready digital infrastructure. The development was highlighted during the EU–Kenya Tech Business Offer Forum held on March 18, 2026, where senior officials from both sides discussed opportunities for deeper collaboration in technology and innovation.
Speaking at the forum, the Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, John Tanui, emphasized Kenya’s commitment to aligning national priorities with emerging technologies. He noted that the country is well positioned to benefit from global digital transformation, particularly through its long-standing relationship with the European Union, which spans more than five decades.
Kenya is currently advancing key policy frameworks to support its digital ecosystem, including the development of a national artificial intelligence strategy and a comprehensive AI policy. The government is also working on a data governance framework aimed at guiding future legislation and strengthening the regulatory environment for digital technologies.
The Principal Secretary highlighted that the collaboration with the European Union has played an important role in shaping Kenya’s approach to artificial intelligence and digital governance. He also noted the government’s focus on creating a supportive and coordinated environment that encourages investment and fosters innovation, particularly from the private sector.
The forum, which brought together stakeholders from both regions, also featured participation from Renate Nikolay and other industry players. Discussions centered on enhancing cooperation in digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and policy development, reinforcing the growing partnership between Kenya and the European Union in advancing the digital economy.
