Postbank Secures Financial Services Provider License from Financial Sector Conduct Authority
The license, issued under the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services (FAIS) Act, authorises Postbank to provide financial advice and intermediary services within a regulated framework.
Postbank has been officially registered as a licensed Financial Services Provider (FSP) by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority, marking a significant milestone in its transition toward becoming a fully operational retail bank. The development was welcomed by Mondli Gungubele of the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, who highlighted it as a sign of progress in strengthening the institution.
The license, issued under the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services (FAIS) Act, authorises Postbank to provide financial advice and intermediary services within a regulated framework. To obtain and maintain this status, the institution is required to meet strict standards in governance, compliance, risk management, operational capability and consumer protection, ensuring responsible participation in South Africa’s financial sector.
The registration reflects ongoing efforts to rebuild Postbank into a sustainable, well-governed state-owned bank capable of serving unbanked communities and supporting the delivery of government financial services. It also forms part of the bank’s five-year transformation strategy, which is structured around stabilising operations, building capacity and differentiating its services. In recent years, the focus has been on strengthening governance, improving regulatory compliance and laying the groundwork for long-term growth, with the FSP license representing a key step in expanding its service offering.
For customers, particularly social grant beneficiaries, the development provides additional assurance that services are delivered within a regulated environment designed to protect consumers and promote transparency and accountability. For government and stakeholders, it signals continued progress in advancing financial inclusion and expanding access to affordable financial services for underserved communities.
The milestone also supports Postbank’s longer-term ambition to secure a full commercial banking license from the South African Reserve Bank through the Prudential Authority, as it continues its journey toward becoming a fully-fledged commercial bank contributing to the strength and stability of the country’s financial system.
