HBMSU Explores AI and Digital Education Collaboration with Arizona State University

March 23, 2026
2 min read

Discussions centered on advancing collaboration in artificial intelligence, digital learning, and lifelong education, as well as examining how universities can adapt to rapid technological change and evolving workforce demands.

A high-level delegation from Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University (HBMSU)  has concluded a strategic visit to Arizona State University in the United States, aimed at strengthening academic collaboration and exploring global best practices in artificial intelligence, digital education and innovation.

The delegation, led by HBMSU Chancellor Mansoor Al Awar, held a series of high-level engagements in Phoenix, Arizona, bringing together academic and administrative leaders from both institutions. The visit focused on identifying opportunities to support the development of new academic and professional initiatives at HBMSU, including its School of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and the Global Academy for Commodities.

During the visit, the delegation met with Michael Crow, President of Arizona State University, and Chris Howard, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Discussions centered on advancing collaboration in artificial intelligence, digital learning, and lifelong education, as well as examining how universities can adapt to rapid technological change and evolving workforce demands.

The HBMSU team also engaged with several of ASU’s leading institutional units, including EdPlus, Knowledge Enterprise and Enterprise Technology. These sessions provided insights into how ASU leverages digital infrastructure and AI-driven systems to scale education while maintaining academic quality and operational sustainability.

Further discussions explored emerging models such as work-integrated learning, stackable credentials, and flexible professional learning pathways. These approaches align closely with HBMSU’s strategy of delivering accessible, lifelong learning experiences that prepare students for a rapidly changing labour market.

As part of the visit, the delegation toured key innovation hubs, including the Thunderbird School of Global Management and the SkySong innovation center, where they examined how universities collaborate with industry to drive entrepreneurship, research and development. HBMSU also presented its own stackable credentials framework, which allows learners to combine professional certifications with academic qualifications in a flexible structure designed to support continuous learning.

Commenting on the visit, Dr. Al Awar highlighted the importance of global academic partnerships in shaping the future of education. He noted that exposure to leading international practices will help HBMSU strengthen its smart learning ecosystem and align education more closely with economic and workforce needs, particularly through the integration of artificial intelligence.

The visit forms part of HBMSU’s broader strategy to expand its global footprint and deepen collaboration with leading institutions, reinforcing the United Arab Emirates’ ambition to position itself as a global hub for digital education and knowledge-driven innovation.
