Ethio Telecom and Ascot Energy in Talks to Power Telecom Infrastructure with Green Energy
The proposed partnership aligns with Ethio telecom’s “Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028” strategy, which seeks to balance rapid technological expansion with environmentally sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure.
Ethio telecom has initiated high-level discussions with Ascot Energy to explore the integration of advanced green energy technologies into its nationwide telecom infrastructure.
The talks were led by CEO Frehiwot Tamru, who hosted a delegation headed by Ascot Energy’s CTO, Gaetano Fasciana. The meeting focused on potential collaboration aimed at strengthening energy efficiency and sustainability across Ethiopia’s expanding telecom network.
The proposed partnership aligns with Ethio telecom’s “Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028” strategy, which seeks to balance rapid technological expansion with environmentally sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure. As the company continues to roll out 4G, 5G, and advanced data centers, the need for reliable and efficient energy solutions has become increasingly critical.
Tamru highlighted that the telecom sector is highly energy-intensive, requiring a strong and resilient power backbone to ensure uninterrupted services, especially across remote and underserved regions. She emphasized that investing in green energy solutions will not only enhance operational efficiency but also reduce costs and support long-term sustainability.
Ethio telecom has already made progress in this area through the deployment of solar-powered telecom sites and broader green infrastructure initiatives. The collaboration with Ascot Energy is expected to build on these efforts by introducing hybrid energy systems designed to improve fuel efficiency, extend battery life, and enhance overall network resilience.
Ascot Energy presented a technical framework featuring IoT-enabled energy solutions with advanced monitoring, remote management, and security capabilities. These innovations aim to optimize operational performance while reducing costs and supporting sustainable infrastructure development.
The Italian firm also praised Ethio telecom’s forward-looking strategy, noting its expanding infrastructure, growing customer base, and the impact of its telebirr platform in driving financial inclusion and digital transformation in Ethiopia.
Both parties agreed to establish a joint technical working group to further assess the proposed solutions and align them with operational requirements. The collaboration is also expected to explore sustainable financing models to support long-term implementation.
This potential partnership marks a significant step in Ethio telecom’s efforts to build a greener, more resilient digital ecosystem while contributing to Ethiopia’s broader sustainability and economic development goals.
